What is the Purpose of Public Education in a Democracy?

When I first entered this class I had no idea what to expect. I knew that I would be completing fieldwork, but the idea of public purposes of education, schooling and democracy was foreign to me. Through the last 14 weeks I have come to understand what is meant by this course title. I believe that the purpose of public education in a democracy is to educate our students to be well-rounded and respectful citizens. Public Education should be an equal opportunity for all of the members of this democracy to grow and develop while acquiring knowledge that will help them do so.

Now that I have had a sort of behind the scenes look at teaching I have come to understand the different corruptions and restrictions that effect out public school system. The things that I have learned about different schools, our government and current teachers has only made my motivation for being a teacher grow stronger. Through this class I have begun to develop a goal for my classroom and myself. I feel that this class has opened my eyes and helped me to understand the true importance of becoming a teacher.

  1. It is great to hear that you are taking negatives and turning them into positives. That is the mentality that we should all have in order to change our society and bring some positive and new viewpoints into the lives of the children. Good to hear this, especially from an Art major. Might need to keep in touch to work together, professionally in the future with programs for the kids!
